Biography
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), born in Le Roncole near Parma, is the defining figure of Italian opera. His creative life spanned six decades and produced twenty-six operas that trace an unparalleled artistic arc from early works like Nabucco to the late masterpieces Otello and Falstaff. La Traviata, Rigoletto, Aida, and Il Trovatore rank among the most frequently performed operas worldwide. Verdi became a symbol of the Risorgimento and Italian unification—the cry 'Viva V.E.R.D.I.' simultaneously proclaimed 'Vittorio Emanuele Re D'Italia'. His ability to translate human conflict into gripping musical drama remains unmatched. The Requiem, composed in memory of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, ranks among the greatest choral works in the literature. Verdi died in Milan at the age of eighty-seven; his funeral drew the largest public crowd in Italian history to that date.
