About the work

Giuseppe Verdi's three-act opera was premiered on 11 March 1851 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and is based on Victor Hugo's controversial play Le roi s'amuse. The first work of Verdi's trilogia popolare, it had to circumvent Austrian censorship through substantial alterations to its setting and characters—the licentious king of Hugo's play became the fictional Duke of Mantua—before reaching the stage.

Plot

The hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto serves the libertine Duke of Mantua, cruelly mocking the wronged husbands and fathers of the Duke's conquests. One such father, Count Monterone, curses him—a curse that haunts Rigoletto thereafter. In secret, Rigoletto shields his beloved daughter Gilda from the corrupt court, but the Duke, posing as a poor student, seduces her. After courtiers abduct Gilda believing her to be Rigoletto's mistress, the jester hires the assassin Sparafucile to murder the Duke. Gilda, still in love, sacrifices her own life in place of the man who betrayed her. Rigoletto opens the sack he believes contains his enemy and finds his dying daughter, collapsing under the fulfilled curse.

Cultural significance

Rigoletto established Verdi's mature style and contains one of opera's most beloved tenor arias, La donna è mobile—which Verdi reputedly withheld from the singers until the last moment to prevent it leaking before the premiere. The Act Three quartet Bella figlia dell'amore is among the supreme ensembles in opera. The work marked a new level of psychological depth for Italian opera, humanising a character conventionally dismissed as grotesque. The title role demands a dramatic baritone of remarkable range and expressive nuance and is among the repertoire's defining challenges.
