Il corsaro

Giuseppe Verdi
Opera · 1848

About the work

Il corsaro is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Lord Byron's 1814 narrative poem The Corsair. Verdi completed the score in 1848 to fulfil a contract with the publisher Francesco Lucca; the opera premiered on 25 October 1848 at the Teatro Grande in Trieste, without Verdi in attendance.

Plot

The pirate captain Corrado infiltrates the fleet of the Pasha Seid but is captured. The harem slave Gulnara kills Seid and frees Corrado, and the two flee to his island. There they learn that his beloved Medora has taken her own life in despair over his presumed death.

Cultural significance

Having lost much of his own enthusiasm for the subject, Verdi saw the premiere fail with both press and public in Trieste, and the opera closed after only three performances. Only later stagings in cities such as Milan and Turin, and twentieth-century Verdi scholarship, drew attention back to some of its musically notable passages.
