The Landestheater Linz is the largest theatre in Upper Austria and is run together with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. Its original house on the Promenade opened on 4 October 1803 as the theatre of the provincial estates; in 1923 it staged the first play by Bertolt Brecht to be performed in Austria. To designs by Clemens Holzmeister, the 421-seat Kammerspiele were built from 1956 to 1958, and in 1957 the main house, now called the Schauspielhaus, was remodelled. Opera, operetta, musicals and dance have been performed since 11 April 2013 at the Musiktheater am Volksgarten, designed by London architect Terry Pawson; it opened with the world premiere of Philip Glass's opera Spuren der Verirrten, based on Peter Handke. Glass had already premiered his opera Kepler here in 2009.
The Landestheater Linz, housed in the Music Theatre at Volksgarten from 2013, is one of the most modern opera houses in Europe — the building with its characteristic glass façade is considered an architectural landmark of Upper Austria.
