The Akademietheater is the second stage of Vienna's Burgtheater and one of the most important venues for contemporary drama in Austria. Opened in 1922, it is housed in the building of the Wiener Konzerthaus and, with around 500 seats, offers a more intimate setting than the grand house on the Ring. Here the Burgtheater ensemble presents above all modern drama, premieres and chamber-style productions. The concentrated atmosphere makes the Akademietheater a favoured place for text-driven, actor-centred theatre. As part of one of the world's most renowned drama theatres, it enjoys international standing.
