The Bregenz Festival is one of the most spectacular opera festivals in the world, taking place annually from July to August in Bregenz on the Austrian shore of Lake Constance. The main attraction is the famous lake stage — the largest open-air stage in the world built on a lake, constructed on stilts directly in Lake Constance with mountain views. The tribune seats around 6,900 spectators in the open-air setting. Every two years a new lake stage production is staged; the spectacular set designs of past productions became world-famous — the eye from Tosca 2007 became a filming location for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. In addition to the lake stage there are indoor opera productions at the Festspielhaus.
The lake stage is completely dismantled every winter: the storms, ice, and waves of Lake Constance would otherwise destroy the delicate structures.
