The Festspielhaus Bregenz stands directly on Lake Constance and is physically linked to the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival. It was built between 1977 and 1980 and opened on 17 July 1980. During the festival its main hall, seating around 1,700, hosts a second opera production and orchestral concerts, and in bad weather it serves as the fallback venue for a scaled-down version of the lake stage production. Architects Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller extended it in 1996/97 with a workshop stage and lake studio and renovated it in 2005/06; a further renovation, including the grandstand, was completed in spring 2025. There are 23 event spaces in all. Outside the festival it hosts the Bregenzer Frühling dance festival, the Bregenz master concerts, the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra and congresses.
The Festspielhaus Bregenz is home to the Bregenz Festival with its famous lake stage on Lake Constance — the largest lake stage in the world with open-air opera productions, which became a James Bond filming location.
