The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz (commonly the Gärtnerplatztheater) opened on 4 November 1865 in Munich's Isarvorstadt at the Gärtnerplatz as a privately run people's theatre. Today it is one of five Bavarian State Theatres and, alongside the Bavarian State Opera, the second opera house of the city of Munich. In October 2017 the building reopened after a general refurbishment. After the call for a people's theatre had been growing in Munich for years, a provisional committee for its founding formed in 1863. On 10 May 1864 the young King Ludwig II, shortly after his accession, granted permission for a new building in the Isarvorstadt. The planning was entrusted to Franz Michael Reiffenstuel. The model for his building, especially the auditorium, was the National Theatre with its "sober neoclassical style". The foundation stone was laid on 25 August 1864, and the theatre opened on 4 November 1865. The crowd of the public was enormous and the magnificent house, brilliantly illuminated to its uppermost rooms, was full to bursting. After a prologue, the allegorical festival play Was wir wollen by Hermann Schmid was performed, with music by Kremplsetzer.
The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, founded in 1865 as a joint-stock theatre, is Munich's second state theatre and concentrates on operetta, light opera, and musical — a repertoire specialisation unique in Germany.
