The Munich Kammerspiele are among the most important and influential drama theatres in the German-speaking world. The main house on Maximilianstraße, the playhouse of 1901, has one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau auditoriums in Europe — a luminously designed hall still regarded as an architectural jewel of the period. Under formative directors such as Otto Falckenberg and later Dieter Dorn, the Kammerspiele became a laboratory of modern director's theatre and a stage for premieres of important 20th-century playwrights. The house maintains a consistently contemporary, often socio-politically committed repertoire, works regularly with leading directors of the present day, and has repeatedly been voted "Theatre of the Year."
Bertolt Brecht spent a formative period as a young dramaturge at the Kammerspiele in 1922 — his early play "Drums in the Night" was performed here.
