The Residenztheater München is the Bavarian State Theatre and operates several venues in Munich, including the historic Cuvilliés Theatre from 1755 — one of the most beautiful Rococo theatres in the world, where Mozart premiered his opera Idomeneo in 1781. The current main building at Max-Joseph-Platz, a 1951 construction following war destruction, seats around 900. The house ensemble produces about twelve premieres per season with a focus on contemporary drama and classics. Under directors like Dieter Dorn (1976-2001) and Martin Kušej (2011-2019), the Resi became one of the most important drama theatres in the German-speaking region. Under directors such as Dieter Dorn and Martin Kušej it became one of the leading drama houses of the German-speaking world.
The Cuvilliés Theatre was saved in the war by dismantling and storing its entire carved Rococo interior — only the bare walls remained and were destroyed.
