The Gasteig is Munich's largest cultural centre and home to the Munich Philharmonic. While the vast main building at Rosenheimer Platz has been closed since 2021 for one of the most expensive cultural renovations in Germany, operations continue at the interim quarters HP8 in the Sendling district — on the site of a historic municipal-utility power station. The listed Hall E was turned into a versatile event space, complemented by the newly built Isarphilharmonie. The Gasteig unites a philharmonic hall, Munich's adult education centre, the city library, and the University of Music and Performing Arts under one roof, and with millions of visitors a year it is among the most visited cultural houses in Europe. Its programme ranges from symphony concerts through readings and congresses to adult-education courses open to all.
The bulky concrete complex at Rosenheimer Platz was controversial from the start — the then conductor Sergiu Celibidache disparagingly compared its acoustics to playing inside a recording studio.
