The Isarphilharmonie in the Gasteig HP8 opened in 2021 as the interim concert hall of the Munich Philharmonic while the main building at Rosenheimer Platz is being renovated. Planned by architect Andreas Cukrowicz, the roughly 1,900-seat hall was erected in a remarkably short construction time from prefabricated modules whose load-bearing structure consists largely of timber. The acoustics were the responsibility of the Japanese sound designer Yasuhisa Toyota, who had already tuned the halls of the Elbphilharmonie and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The result surprised experts and audiences alike: a building intended as a stopgap achieved a sound quality that holds its own against permanent top-tier halls, and triggered a debate about whether Munich still needs its old main house at all.
The stopgap turned out so well that there was serious discussion of keeping it permanently — an emergency solution that called the multimillion-euro main house into question.
