Prinzregententheater

Munich, Germany

The Prinzregententheater in Munich was built in 1901 at the instigation of Prince Regent Luitpold as the Munich counterpart to the Bayreuth Festspielhaus and was originally conceived as a Wagner festival venue. The building, designed by the architect Max Littmann, combines late Art Nouveau with echoes of the Bayreuth construction and has a sunken orchestra pit on Wagner's model. After destruction in the Second World War, the theatre was extensively restored in the 1990s and reopened in 1996. Today the Prinzregententheater is the seat of the Theaterakademie August Everding and fills its programme with student productions, guest performances and special events. The Bavarian State Opera occasionally uses the house as a second venue for special productions. With its historically important architecture and a capacity of around 1,100 seats, the Prinzregententheater is one of the most important stages in Munich alongside the National Theatre and the Gärtnerplatztheater. The acoustics are regarded as excellent and are especially suited to Wagner and late-Romantic repertoire.

The Prinzregententheater was built in 1901 modelled after the Bayreuth Festspielhaus — Prince Regent Luitpold wanted to give Munich a Wagner stage whose amphitheatre layout still impresses today.
