The Komödie im Bayerischen Hof is a large private theatre in the Munich hotel Bayerischer Hof. In the 570-seat theatre hall, comedies, musical farces, musicals and revues are performed. The cultural events in the hotel began as early as 1886, but were abruptly ended by the destruction of Munich in 1944. After the reconstruction, the grandmother of today's hotel owner, a celebrated singer, had a concert hall set up. Her son Falk Volkhardt commissioned the architect Erwin Schleich to design today's theatre, which opened in 1961 under the direction of Gerhard Metzner (1914–1969) with the comedy The Glass of Water by Eugène Scribe. The hotel is run as a family business by Innegrit Volkhardt. In the elegantly renovated theatre, stars such as Joachim Fuchsberger, Uschi Glas, Heiner Lauterbach, Michaela May, Christiane Hörbiger and Heidelinde Weis have appeared, among others. Besides musical works, children's plays are also offered (for example in the pre-Christmas season).
The Komödie im Bayerischen Hof in Munich is one of the few classical boulevard theatres in Bavaria — the tradition-rich Hotel Bayerischer Hof has hosted the theatre since 1989 as a cultural centre of Munich's inner city.
