Landestheater Niederösterreich

St. Pölten, Austria

The Landestheater Niederösterreich on the Rathausplatz in St. Pölten dates back to 1820, when master builder Josef Schwerdtfeger converted a military prison into the town's first permanent theatre; it opened on 26 December 1820. After the Ringtheater fire of 1881 it was used only as a ballroom for fire safety reasons, until Heinrich Wohlmeyer completely rebuilt it in 1893. During the Second World War bombs destroyed the roof, so that after reopening in 1948 the theatre initially performed without one. It was remodelled again from 1966 to 1969 to designs by Paul Pfaffenbichler and has since seated 411; in 2002 the 120-seat Theaterwerkstatt was added. Since the 2005/06 season the house, run by the province, has been a theatre devoted solely to drama.
