Volkstheater Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

The Volkstheater Frankfurt is the city's most important dialect stage and performs in the Cantate-Saal on Großer Hirschgraben in the city centre, near the Goethe House. Founded in 1971 by the actress Liesel Christ and fellow campaigners as the non-profit association "Frankfurter Volkstheater", it set out from the start to be more than a mere dialect farce theatre: Liesel Christ aspired to a literary popular theatre "built on the breadth of world literature". To this day the ensemble presents comedies and classics in the Hessian dialect, cultivating the Frankfurt vernacular and theatrical tradition. After the death of its popular leading lady, the house bears her name in her memory.
