Die Schmiere is an institution of the German cabaret scene and has for decades occupied the monastery cellar of the Karmeliterkloster near the Römerberg in Frankfurt's old town. Since its first performance on 9 September 1950 – founded by Rudolf Rolfs – it has described itself, tongue in cheek, as "the worst theatre in the world", while being Germany's only repertory cabaret: several programmes run in parallel and often stay on the bill for years. With an idiosyncratic mix of cabaret, revue, show and comedy, an ensemble of about a dozen takes a politically incorrect aim at the everyday madness of German life. Once a month the "Magic Monday" offers an evening of magic.
Satirical cabaret in the cellar of the Karmeliterkloster, running since 1950 – Germany's only repertory cabaret.
