The Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck is the largest multi-genre theatre in western Austria, presenting drama, opera, operetta, musicals and dance, with music provided by the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra. On the Rennweg, near the Hofburg and the Hofgarten, a theatre built by Christoph Gumpp stood from 1654; it is regarded as the first free-standing opera house in the German-speaking world and opened with Antonio Cesti's La Cleopatra. The present building, designed by the Italian architect Giuseppe Segustini, was inaugurated in 1846 with Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia and was rebuilt and considerably enlarged between 1961 and 1967. The main house seats around 800. Since 2018 the Kammerspiele, with about 200 seats, have been located in the neighbouring Haus der Musik.
The Tyrolean State Theatre Innsbruck was opened in 1846 in a Classicist building with views of the Alps — the three-genre house maintains a special tradition with folk-cultural material from Tyrol.
