The Innsbruck Festival of Early Music ranks among the world's most renowned festivals for historically informed performance. Founded in 1976, it draws on Innsbruck's great tradition as a centre of Renaissance and Baroque music – a music-loving archduke once resided here. At its heart are staged Baroque operas, rediscovered at the highest level in stylish historic venues such as the Hofburg or Ambras Castle. Through its singing competition, the festival also nurtures young talent in the field. Every summer it turns Innsbruck into an international meeting point of the early-music scene.
