The Stadttheater Grein is considered the oldest theatre in Austria still in use and is a unique cultural monument on the Danube. Established in 1791 by the citizens of the small Upper Austrian town in a former granary of the town hall, it has preserved its charming historic furnishings to this day – including the original benches bearing the family names of the townspeople. The intimate auditorium transports visitors directly into the theatre culture of the late 18th century. Performances still take place here, so the Grein theatre combines living tradition with museum value and represents a special gem of Austrian theatre history.
