Winterhuder Fährhaus

Hamburg, Germany

The Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus is a private theatre in Hamburg. It lies in Winterhude on Hudtwalckerstraße, corner of Winterhuder Kai, directly on the Alster. The theatre was founded in 1988 by Jürgen Wölffer. Before the theatre was built, the site had been known beyond the district's borders since the mid-19th century as an excursion venue, but never served as a ferry house in the actual sense. Today's comedy house stands on the site of the historic Winterhuder Fährhaus, built in 1854 by the coal merchant Carl Friedrich Jacobs initially as a residential house with a coal shed. On the opposite side of the street, passengers often waited to make an excursion by Alster steamer. Since there was only a primitive jetty and no way to shelter from wind and weather, Jacobs was sometimes asked whether it was possible to wait for the ship in his rooms. So the coal merchant applied for a licence to run a "fine tavern". The "Fährhaus" became an attractive excursion destination, and from 1876 also had permission to offer dance events. Around 1890 a new Art Nouveau hall building was erected.
