The Laeiszhalle, formerly called the Musikhalle, is Hamburg's tradition-rich concert hall, opened in 1908 in the neo-Baroque style. Until the opening of the Elbphilharmonie in 2017 it was, for over a century, the city's principal concert hall and remains a treasured venue for classical music, chamber music, and choral concerts. The magnificent building was endowed by the shipowner couple Carl and Sophie Laeisz — whose famous shipping company operated the legendary "Flying P-Liner," those fast cargo sailing ships whose names all began with the letter P. The Laeiszhalle is home to several orchestras and ensembles and, with its outstanding acoustics and elegant architecture, ranks among the most beautiful concert halls in Germany.
Sophie Laeisz insisted in her will that the building be open to all Hamburg citizens — a bourgeois ideal that still shapes the hall as a people's concert house today.
