The Altonaer Theater, founded in 1876, is one of Hamburg's most tradition-rich private theatres and lies in the western district of Altona. The house became known above all for its elaborate stage adaptations of great novels — from Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks" to Charles Dickens — a specialisation that makes the theatre unique nationwide. With a permanent ensemble it maintains a sophisticated, literarily shaped drama repertoire that attracts a loyal regular audience. The Altonaer Theater sees itself as a storytelling theatre that brings great epic material to life on stage, and ranks alongside the major state stages among the distinctive private theatres of the Hanseatic city with its own artistic profile.
The stage version of "Buddenbrooks" became such a success that other theatres adopted the adaptation — Altona made novel-based theatre popular in Germany.
