The Ohnsorg-Theater is Hamburg's most famous Low German theatre, founded in 1902. It cultivates Low German folk theatre with comedies and farces and became popular throughout Germany through decades of television broadcasts. Since 2011 the house has resided on Heidi-Kabel-Platz near the main station, named after its most famous actress. The TV recordings of the Low German plays were often dubbed for High German audiences, making Heidi Kabel a nationally known folk actress. With its repertoire, the Ohnsorg-Theater keeps the Low German language and theatrical tradition alive and attracts a loyal audience that treasures the cheerful, down-to-earth world of northern German folk theatre. Its long-running televised performances made Low German comedy familiar to viewers far beyond the north.
Low German is spoken by ever fewer people in northern Germany — the Ohnsorg-Theater is today regarded as one of the most important guardians of the endangered regional language.
