The Tonhalle Düsseldorf, a striking domed building on the bank of the Rhine, is home to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and one of the most characteristic concert halls in Germany. The building was originally erected in 1925/26 as a planetarium and converted into a concert hall in 1978 — the imposing dome, once a projection surface for the starry sky, still shapes the unique spatial experience today. Under the dome of the former observatory, the house again projects constellations onto the ceiling at some concerts, a reminiscence of its planetarium past. The Tonhalle maintains a broad programme from classical symphonic music to modern crossover formats and is among the acoustically and architecturally most appealing concert halls on the Rhine.
The dome has a diameter of about 38 metres — concert-goers sit beneath one of the largest free-spanning vaults of its kind in Germany.
