The Düsseldorf Playhouse, opened in 1970, is one of the most important drama theatres in North Rhine-Westphalia and a major work of West German postwar modernism. Architect Bernhard Pfau created one of Germany's most characteristic theatre buildings with its curved white aluminium façade — an organic, wave-like form that deliberately sets itself apart from the strict geometry of its surroundings on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. The square is named after the legendary actor and director Gustaf Gründgens. With a large and a small auditorium, the house produces a broad repertoire of classics and contemporary drama and has been honoured several times for German theatre festivals under changing directorships.
The curved façade was so unusual that the building was initially mocked as a "cheese dome" — today the organic structure is a protected monument.
