Capitol Theater Düsseldorf

The Capitol Theater in Düsseldorf-Bilk, opened on 5 October 2000 as the first house of the Stage Entertainment group in the German Rhineland, is one of the most important musical venues in North Rhine-Westphalia. Built on the site of a former power plant designed in 1908 by Düsseldorf city architect Johannes Radke in brick-expressionist Wilhelmine style, the conversion preserved the listed exterior brickwork including the characteristic chimney while creating a fully modern theatre space within. The auditorium seats 1,700 across orchestra and gallery levels, configured specifically for musical productions with deep stage, full fly tower, and orchestra pit for live music. Long-running productions have included German-language premieres of "Saturday Night Fever", "Dirty Dancing", "We Will Rock You", and "Hinterm Horizont — Das Udo-Lindenberg-Musical". The Capitol regularly hosts touring productions of major musicals during their German market runs and serves as a regional second home for Hamburg-originated productions of Stage Entertainment. The location at Erkrather Straße, near the Düsseldorf trade fair grounds and the Düsseldorf Arena, makes the Capitol part of the city's entertainment district. The connection to the heritage industrial building gives the venue a distinctive character among Germany's commercial musical houses — the contrast between austere red brick exterior and the contemporary theatre interior is one of the architectural signatures of Düsseldorf's former working-class districts.
