The Ballhaus Naunynstraße in Berlin-Kreuzberg, founded in 1976 as a neighbourhood cultural centre and reopened in 2008 under the artistic direction of Shermin Langhoff as a "post-migrant theatre" stage, is one of the most influential independent theatres in German-speaking Europe and a defining venue for post-migrant theatre culture. The historic building, originally constructed in 1863 as a ball and entertainment venue for the predominantly working-class population of Kreuzberg, was converted into a cultural centre in the 1970s when the surrounding district became a centre of Turkish-German immigrant life. Under Langhoff's direction from 2008 to 2013, the Ballhaus introduced the concept of "post-migrantisches Theater" — a theatre that treats migration not as exotic subject matter but as the lived reality of urban contemporary Germany. Productions by directors including Nurkan Erpulat, Hakan Savaş Mican, and Lukas Langhoff have toured to the Berliner Theatertreffen and major European festivals. The 2010 production of "Verrücktes Blut" by Erpulat and Jens Hillje won the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis and was invited to Theatertreffen 2011 — a breakthrough moment for post-migrant theatre. The intimate venue with around 160 seats has remained committed to its programmatic identity: stories about and from the children and grandchildren of immigration, queer perspectives, Black German experience, and contemporary urban realities. Under successive artistic directors Wagner Carvalho, Tunçay Kulaoğlu, and others, the house has consistently positioned itself as an alternative to the city-funded state theatres and has shaped the curriculum of theatre studies departments across the German-speaking world.
The Ballhaus Naunynstraße under Shermin Langhoff's direction from 2008 coined the term "postmigrantisches Theater" (post-migrant theatre) — now an international theatre category that shapes curricula at German theatre schools.
