Deutsche Oper am Rhein

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein, founded in 1956 as a unique theatre confederation between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg, is one of Germany's largest opera companies and the only opera house in the country jointly run by two cities. Productions are shown at both the Opernhaus Düsseldorf at Heinrich-Heine-Allee (opened 1956, rebuilt on the site of the original 1875 Stadttheater destroyed in the war) and the Theater Duisburg (opened 1912 in neo-Baroque style by architects Carl Moritz and Martin Wagner) — both venues share orchestra, ensemble, and repertoire on an alternating schedule. The company stages around 280 performances per season across opera and the affiliated Ballett am Rhein, currently led by ballet director Demis Volpi. The orchestra — the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra at the Düsseldorf venue and the Duisburg Philharmonic at the Duisburg venue — alternates as opera and concert orchestra, a structure unique in Germany. The 1,342-seat Düsseldorf hall and the 1,118-seat Duisburg theatre together place the Deutsche Oper am Rhein among the larger German house ensembles by capacity. Among notable singers who began or developed their careers here are Mirella Freni, Anja Silja, and more recently Aida Garifullina and Bogdan Volkov. Conductors of international stature including Alberto Erede, Janos Kulka, and Axel Kober (current General Music Director) have shaped the house's musical profile. The company is repeatedly recognised for ensemble strength rather than star-driven casting — a profile that has earned it the Opernwelt magazine's "Opera House of the Year" title in 2014.
