Theater Bonn is the multi-genre theatre of the former federal capital and comprises opera and drama across several venues. As an umbrella institution it unites the opera house on the Rhine with the Kammerspiele in Bad Godesberg and the workshop stage. Bonn as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven shapes the city's musical self-image — the annual Beethoven Festival and the close connection to the composer are both cultural heritage and obligation. While Bonn was the seat of government, the theatre was among the representative stages of West Germany; even after parliament and government moved to Berlin, it has held its own as an important cultural centre of the Rhine region with ambitious music theatre.
Beethoven was born in 1770 just a few minutes' walk from today's theatre — his birthplace in the Bonngasse is now one of the most-visited composer museums in the world.
