The Contra-Kreis-Theater is one of Bonn's most tradition-rich private theatres, founded in 1949 in the postwar period. Located in the historic Sterntor quarter of Bonn's old town, it has for decades cultivated a repertoire of comedies, boulevard plays, and literary drama with a small ensemble and prominent guests. During West Germany's Bonn era, when the city was the seat of government, the intimate house was among the stages where politicians, diplomats, and capital-city journalists gathered in the evenings. Even after parliament and government moved to Berlin, the theatre has held its own as a fixture of Bonn's cultural life, relying on pointed entertainment theatre in an intimate atmosphere in which the audience comes within a few metres of the actors.
In the small auditorium the audience sits so close to the stage that in some productions the actors could take the programme booklet straight out of a spectator's hand.
