The Bonn Opera House on the bank of the Rhine is the opera venue of Theater Bonn and opened in 1965 as a striking postwar building. With its glass foyer front and its prominent location directly on the Rhine, it is among the characteristic cultural buildings of the former federal capital — a transparent, light-filled structure embodying the optimistic spirit of departure of the young Federal Republic. While Bonn was the seat of government, the opera house was among the representative stages of the republic; state guests were received here with gala performances. The house maintains a broad repertoire from Mozart through Wagner to rediscoveries of rarely performed works and is home to the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn. In Beethoven's birthplace, the opera combines musical heritage with ambitious contemporary theatre.
The glass foyer opens toward the Rhine — during intermissions visitors gaze across the river, a deliberate contrast to the enclosed ornate buildings of older operas.
