The Stage Theater im Hafen was built in 1994 specially for "Buddy — The Musical" on the south bank of the Elbe in Hamburg's harbour and is thus among the first theatres in Germany built specifically for musical productions. With a capacity of 2,030 seats and a special location right by the water, the house offers a unique arrival experience: guests reach the theatre by harbour ferry, which functions as part of the staging. Since 2001 the house has been the German home of Disney's "The Lion King" — with well over 18 million visitors by now, one of the most successful musicals in Germany of all. The atmospheric combination of harbour backdrop, ferry crossing and opulent stage production has made the Theater im Hafen one of Hamburg's most striking cultural destinations.
The Stage Theater im Hafen, formerly known as Theater Neue Flora, is connected to Hamburg city centre via the Elbe by ferry — The Lion King has run here without interruption since 2001.
