Stage Operettenhaus

Hamburg, Germany

The Operettenhaus on the Spielbudenplatz on the Reeperbahn looks back on an eventful history: originally founded in 1841 as the Urania-Theater, it became a classic operetta house from 1947 after the war, before marking the beginning of the German musical era in 1986 with the German premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats". The success story of "Cats" ran for over 15 years and is regarded as the founding moment of the commercial musical scene in Germany. After "Cats" followed milestones such as "Mamma Mia!" in its German premiere and currently "Hamilton" — the German premiere of the Pulitzer-winning work by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The 1,435-seat house on the Reeperbahn holds its own amid the bustle of St. Pauli as a place of artistic care and remains a central building block of Hamburg's musical landscape.
