The Konzerthaus Berlin on the Gendarmenmarkt, originally built in 1821 as a playhouse by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, is one of Berlin's most beautiful neoclassical buildings and home to the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Schinkel erected the building after a fire destroyed the predecessor theatre and created, with the monumental columned front and the broad open staircase, an icon of Prussian neoclassicism. After severe wartime destruction and an elaborate reconstruction in the GDR, the house reopened as a concert hall in 1984. On the same site, Carl Maria von Weber's "Der Freischütz" premiered in 1821 — in the predecessor building, to which the house's history connects. Today the Konzerthaus, with its location between the German and French Cathedrals, is one of the most magnificent concert venues in Berlin.
Schinkel designed not only the building but also its interior down to the chandeliers — a total work of art of Prussian classicism from a single hand.
