Die Wühlmäuse is one of the best-known cabaret theatres in Germany, founded in 1960 by the actor and comedian Dieter Hallervorden. The house in the west of Berlin, since 2003 at Theodor-Heuss-Platz, is a fixture of the German cabaret and comedy scene, offering political cabaret, comedy, music, and guest performances by renowned artists. Founder Dieter Hallervorden, known to a wide audience through film and television, still performs on his own stage into old age — one of the longest uninterrupted stage careers in all of Germany. Die Wühlmäuse combine sharp-tongued topical satire with broad entertainment and have given generations of cabaret artists a stage over more than six decades. Its biting topical programmes remain a barometer of German political life to this day.
The name alludes to "burrowing" in the political underground — founded in divided Berlin, the cabaret was always a seismograph of West German sentiment.
