Deutsches Theater Berlin

Berlin, Germany

The Deutsches Theater Berlin, located on Schumannstraße in Berlin-Mitte, is among the most important German-language repertory theatres. Founded in 1850 and reopened in its current form in 1883 as a response to the commercial theatre scene of imperial Berlin, the house was shaped into a world-class ensemble theatre under Otto Brahm and especially Max Reinhardt, who directed here from 1905 to 1932. Reinhardt's stagings established many of the conventions of modern direction. The house comprises the historic 600-seat Deutsches Theater, the adjacent 230-seat Kammerspiele (where Reinhardt developed the intimate chamber style), and the Box studio for experimental work. The Deutsches Theater has remained a defining artistic theatre through periods of division and reunification, with Intendants including Thomas Langhoff, Bernd Wilms, and Ulrich Khuon. Every significant German-speaking director of the past several generations has worked on these stages.

Max Reinhardt turned the Deutsches Theater into Europe's most famous stage from 1905. Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Müller later rehearsed here as well.
