The James M. Nederlander Theatre is one of the most opulent theatres in Chicago's Loop and a flagship venue of Broadway In Chicago. Opened in 1926 as the Oriental Theatre, it was a lavish movie palace by the architects Rapp & Rapp, dazzling audiences with an extravagant East-Asian-inspired interior. After decades of decline, the house was elaborately restored and reopened in 1998 as a stage for large Broadway musicals. Since 2019 it has borne the name of longtime Nederlander chairman James M. Nederlander. With more than 2,000 seats, it ranks among the city's largest theatres and presents mainly top-tier touring musicals and Broadway productions. Set in the heart of Chicago's theatre district, it blends historic splendor with modern stagecraft.
The theatre stands on the site of the Iroquois Theatre, where a 1903 fire — one of the deadliest in US history — killed hundreds of people.
