Chicago Opera Theater (COT), founded in 1973, is Chicago's second major opera company alongside the large Lyric Opera – with a deliberately different profile. COT specialises in rarely staged, contemporary and new works, filling an important niche beyond the standard repertoire. Performances take place mainly in the Harris Theater at Millennium Park. With initiatives to support composers – including a residency programme for new operas – COT sees itself as a laboratory for the future of the art form and a daring counterpart to its larger sibling on Lake Michigan.
