The Hebbel am Ufer, HAU for short, is one of the most important houses for contemporary performance, dance and theatre in Germany. The network of three venues — HAU1 on the Stresemannstraße (formerly the Hebbel-Theater of 1908), HAU2 on the Hallesches Ufer and HAU3 on the Tempelhofer Ufer — was founded in 2003 and is regarded internationally as a reference address for experimental contemporary theatre. The HAU has no permanent ensemble but curates international productions and co-productions. Under intendants such as Annemie Vanackere, the HAU developed into a place for post-dramatic theatre, dance theatre and performative installations. Renowned artists such as Rimini Protokoll, Constanza Macras and She She Pop have developed or premiered their most important works at the house. The HAU sees itself as an open space for social and aesthetic debates and plays a key role in Berlin's independent scene. Festivals such as "Tanz im August" and "Foreign Affairs" have made the HAU their central venue.
The HAU unites three venues in Berlin-Kreuzberg and is one of the most important houses for contemporary dance and post-dramatic theatre in Europe.
