The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music is the music school of the University of Texas at Austin and part of its College of Fine Arts. One of the largest and most comprehensive music programs in the United States, it spans classical performance, composition and conducting, jazz, and musicology. The school has carried its present name since a transformative 2008 gift from Austin philanthropists Sarah and Ernest Butler. Across the year it presents hundreds of concerts, solo recitals, and opera productions — many free of charge — featuring students alongside internationally sought-after guest artists. With its own performance spaces such as Bates Recital Hall and the McCullough Theatre, the Butler School is a vibrant center of Austin's musical life.
The school's Bates Recital Hall houses the monumental Visser-Rowland organ, one of the largest mechanical-action concert organs in the US.
