Arizona Opera, founded in 1971, is the statewide opera company of Arizona – unusual in that it regularly performs in two cities: Phoenix (Symphony Hall) and Tucson. The company presents grand repertoire as well as works connected to the American Southwest; through its "Arizona Bold" initiative it has recently championed contemporary and regional subjects, including operas about the border and desert region. Arizona Opera thus combines classical operatic tradition with a markedly regional, present-day programme.
