Austin Opera, founded in 1985 (long known as Austin Lyric Opera), is the professional opera company of the Texas capital and performs mainly in the Long Center for the Performing Arts, overlooking the skyline across Lady Bird Lake. The company presents popular repertoire in internationally cast productions and complements it with contemporary works and formats that suit Austin's vibrant music scene. As a cultural institution in a city defined by live music, Austin Opera blends traditional operatic grandeur with the open, experimental spirit of the region.
