Biography

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), born in Salzburg, is among the supreme figures of Western music and composed in virtually every genre of his era with equal mastery. A child prodigy who toured European courts from the age of six, Mozart settled in Vienna in 1781 as a freelance musician and produced the mature masterpieces that define his reputation. His three collaborations with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte—Le nozze di Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787), and Così fan tutte (1790)—are among the greatest operas ever written, alongside the German-language works Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Die Zauberflöte. Beyond opera, he left symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and the unfinished Requiem. Mozart died in Vienna at thirty-five of causes that remain medically debated; his body was placed in a common grave.
