Idomeneo

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Opera · 1781

About the work

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's three-act opera seria was premiered on 29 January 1781 at the Residenztheater Munich—the composer's twenty-fifth year and his first mature operatic masterpiece. The libretto by Giambattista Varesco, based on a French text by Antoine Danchet, is a neoclassical drama set on ancient Crete after the Trojan War. Mozart regarded Idomeneo as among his most important works and returned to it repeatedly in later revisions.

Plot

King Idomeneo of Crete, returning from the Trojan War, is caught in a storm and vows to Neptune that he will sacrifice the first person he meets on shore if the god spares his ship. The first person he meets is his own son Idamante. Idomeneo tries to escape the vow, hiding his son among the Trojan princess Ilia's retinue. Neptune's wrath descends on Crete—a sea monster devastates the population. When Idamante himself offers to be sacrificed to save his people, the revelation of pure love between him and Ilia moves Neptune to relent. The god demands only that Idomeneo abdicate in favour of Idamante. The opera closes with celebrations of dynastic renewal.

Cultural significance

Idomeneo is the greatest opera seria ever composed and the threshold between the baroque-rococo tradition and the dramatic reforms Mozart would complete with Le nozze di Figaro. The orchestration—with elaborate wind writing, unprecedented chorus usage, and tempests of symphonic weight—influenced Gluck and anticipated Beethoven. Productions by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and René Jacobs have kept the work in the repertoire despite its demanding vocal casting and elaborate staging requirements.
