The Volksoper Wien is Vienna's second major opera house, residing in a historicist building opened in 1898 as the Kaiser-Jubilee City Theatre in Vienna's 9th district — originally erected for the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I's reign. The hall with around 1,330 seats is the main forum for operetta, light opera, and musical in Vienna — a repertoire deliberately not performed by the Vienna State Opera. The house ensemble produces about twelve premieres per season with a mix of Viennese operetta classics like The Merry Widow and Die Fledermaus, light operas like The Magic Flute, and musicals. The Vienna State Ballet shares its domicile here with the State Opera.
The Volksoper still adheres to German-language versions — even Italian operas are often sung here in German, a tradition nearly extinct in Vienna.
