Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (United Stages Vienna) was founded in 1987; its first general director was Peter Weck, whose German-language production of Cats at the Theater an der Wien had set audience records from 1983. As a subsidiary of Wien Holding, it now runs the Theater an der Wien, the Raimund Theater and the Ronacher. Since 1990 it has focused on original musicals, often featuring figures from Austrian history: Elisabeth (1992), Mozart! (1999) and Rebecca (2006) by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, and Dance of the Vampires (1997) with music by Jim Steinman. Many of these premieres were later staged abroad, for example in Japan and on Broadway. Musicals now play at the Raimund Theater and the Ronacher, while the Theater an der Wien has been an opera house since 2006 and has also run the Kammeroper since 2012/13.
The Vereinigte Bühnen Wien is Vienna's musical conglomerate with Raimund Theatre, Ronacher, and Theater an der Wien — hits like Elisabeth, Dance of the Vampires, and Mozart! were premiered here and internationally marketed.
