Theater Oberhausen

Oberhausen, Germany

The Theater Oberhausen is one of the most significant municipal spoken-theatre stages in the Ruhr region and was founded in 1920. The house with around 750 seats, a functional building from 1962, has particularly profiled itself under the directorships of Florian Vogel and Peter Carp as a laboratory for contemporary material and politically engaged theatre. The drama ensemble produces eight to ten premieres per season and works regularly with prominent directors. The theatre understands itself as the cultural centre of a post-industrial city and offers a programme that oscillates between classical drama and socially relevant contemporary plays. The promotion of young authors and directors is a trademark of the house.

Did you know?

The Theater Oberhausen has been repeatedly nominated as Theatre of the Year in Germany — a remarkable recognition for a city theatre of this size.
