The Theater an der Wien is a historic stage in Vienna's 6th district, opened in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder — Mozart's librettist and the original director of The Magic Flute. Legendary world premieres took place here: Beethoven's Fidelio (1805) and many of his symphonies and piano concertos had their premieres here. Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus also had its first performance here in 1874. The historicist hall with around 1,000 seats has been restored several times. Since 2006 the Theater an der Wien has been Vienna's third opera house alongside the Staatsoper and Volksoper, concentrating on stagione operation with a focus on Baroque, Mozart, and contemporary opera.
After the 1805 premiere of "Fidelio," the audience consisted mainly of Napoleonic officers — Viennese society had fled the occupied city.
