The Metropolitan Opera House – today usually called "The Met Philadelphia" – is a historic opera house on North Broad Street. The impresario Oscar Hammerstein I had the magnificent building erected in 1908 to designs by the architect William H. McElfatrick; on its opening it was one of the largest opera houses in the world. After its early operatic years, the house served for decades as a vaudeville theatre, cinema, ballroom and even a church, before falling into disrepair. In 2018 the "Met" reopened, following an extensive multi-million-dollar restoration, as a concert and event venue seating around 3,500. Today the landmark building combines the aura of a classic opera house with a varied programme of pop, rock and classical music, and stands as an impressive testament to Philadelphia's rich theatrical history.
After its restoration, the Met reopened in December 2018 with a concert by Bob Dylan.
